Italian Cup

The Italian Cup was played in January this year with the eight teams descending on Tortona for the tournament, starting with Sunday’s quarterfinals. Jessica Shepard and Schio won the first game, dispatching newcomers Roseto 96-57. Sassari edged Sara Roumy and Sesto San Giovanni in the next game. The home team Derthona played next, getting a strong game from Nathalie Fontaine in an 83-76 win over a Campobasso team playing well in the league. Venezia stifled Broni 63-39 in the day’s final game.

There was no surprise in Monday’s first semifinal as it was Jessica Shepard leading Schio again in an 88-56 win over Sassari. Derthona’s run continued with an even bigger surprise, a 74-62 win over Venezia. The championship game was on Tuesday and it was Cornelia Fondren and Pallas Kunaiyi-Akpanah who were trying to make it a historic run for Derthona. Cecilia Zandalasini and Schio erased the deficit after halftime though and got the 79-72 win.
