Spanish League Round 15 January 7th

The halfway point of the regular season was reached on Wednesday with a full round of simultaneous tipoffs to set the field for the Queen’s Cup. Araski lost to Jairis 84-74, which ended up being an important result for them in the standings. Mariam Coulibaly looked ready to keep the top spot, but Gernika rallied impressively in the second half to get a 72-62 win. That opened the door for Zaragoza to be all alone in first place and they had a tough game, but did grind out the 52-46 victory over Ibaeta, which had their terrible slide continue after a dream start, still earning a spot in the cup.

The cup was not on anyone’s mind in what was probably the biggest game of the day, the one between the two teams at the bottom of the standings. Gran Canaria was looking to stay within a game of safety, but it was Estepona that got the 80-64 win to pull out of the danger zone in the tiebreaker. Estudiantes sits at the top of that group of teams sitting in safe spots and the other spot for the drop after losing to Iyana Martin and Avenida despite the best efforts of Frieda Buhner. The one game that still had cup implications saw Ferrol miss their chance to take the last spot, falling to Leganes 78-73 in Madrid. Valencia fended off a late surge from Ensino to leave Lugo with a 78-75 win. Joventut Badalona won 92-83 to sit just outside of the playoff spots while Laia Raventos and Sedis now sit in the last safe spot.
