World Cup Qualifying Game 5 March 17th

Wuhan

The two African teams met in the first game of the final day of qualifying on Tuesday. Mali knew that they at least needed a win over Perina Leime and eliminated South Sudan as Alima Dembele led them again in a 97-74 victory. That left them needing to wait for the next game to find out their fate and the news was good with Kyara Linskens and Belgium finishing a perfect tournament with a 93-50. That left Czechia as the team waiting on the result of another game and they got the help that they needed from Han Xu and China, which defeated Damiris Dantas and Brazil 83-71, leaving the visitors with an improbable five global tournament drought.

Istanbul

The first game at this site was an elimination game with the winner still needing help and Japan quickly took care of business with an 83-39 win over Argentina. That result meant that Canada would need another result in their favor to qualify and they certainly did not want to wait for the final game to determine their fate. Sami Whitcomb and Australia continued be a nuisance to the rest of the group even though they entered the tournament automatically qualified, getting the 82-76 win over Kayla Alexander and company. That meant that result of the final game would determine the final team to advance with Japan qualifying. It was simple for Hungary as they would take the spot with a win or cede it to Canada with a loss. Turkey battled hard despite being qualified already, but Dorka Juhasz made sure that Hungary prevailed 89-74.

Senegal would not be able to qualify without help even with a win in the opener, but Italy proved to be far too tough of an opponent to even consider that scenario, breezing to an 85-35 victory. The next game would determine which of the already qualified teams would finish in the top spot and it was Kahleah Copper and the United States completed an undefeated run with an 84-70 win over Spain. New Zealand needed a big enough win to flip tiebreakers to their favor and they took the lead early, but Puerto Rico bounced back by halftime and got the 77-61 win to advance without the need for calculations.
