The top eight teams from the first half of the season headed to Tarragona to contest this year’s Queen’s Cup. There were two quarterfinals on Thursday, starting with Merritt Hempe returning to lead Zaragoza past Ibaeta 71-61. Valencia won the next game 83-72 over Ensino. The other two quarterfinals were played on Friday, starting with Jairis’s 72-56 win over Leganes. Khadijiah Cave and Avenida showed that they should not be counted out yet this season with a 76-53 win over Girona.
Valencia won the first semifinal on Saturday to send a message to Zaragoza that they will also compete for the league title. Iyana Martin and Avenida looked to join them, but it was Jairis that prevailed 76-73. Both teams had something to prove in Sunday’s final and Jairis had the far better start on their way to a halftime lead. Valencia surged out of the break to take the lead and held on to a 70-65 win, meaning that there was no repeat victory for Jairis.
