AfroBasket 2025 Day 1

The final confederation tournament of the year started on Saturday in Abidjan, Ivory Coast with twelve teams competing to be crowned champions of Africa. The teams are divided into four groups with each team playing two games over the first three days. No teams are eliminated after this round, but the top team in each group gets a bye in the first knockout round to advance straight to the quarterfinals. The winner will receive an automatic spot in next year’s World Cup and be joined by the next three highest-placing teams in the qualifying tournaments.

The day opened in Group C with Ndioma Kane and Senegal getting an easy 92-45 win over Guinea. Nigeria is looking for their fifth consecutive gold medal in this competition and opened up their title defense with a 92-45 win over Rwanda. The hosts played next in Group A and Laetitia Sahie paced them in a 75-63 win over Egypt. The Group B nightcap ended up being the game of the day by far and it ended up being Mali that edged past South Sudan 55-53.
