The finals in Argentina concluded this week as Obras fended off elimination on Thursday. They got to host the deciding game on Saturday, but another 30 points from Florencia Chagas was not enough and Ferro won the championship.
There was one deciding game in Mexico’s semifinals on Tuesday and Chihuahua got the win at home over Monterrey. Aguascalientes hosted the first two games of the finals on Friday and Saturday. They won the opener, but Chihuahua held on the next day to get the chance to win the championship at home.
The week in Brazil included three league games on Wednesday, starting with Campinas getting a win over Sampaio. Cerrado had an easy win at Uninassau and then Araraquara finished the day with a win over Sao Jose. Amanda Da Silva had 32 points on Thursday in Mesquita’s win over Salvador. League play took a break over the weekend for the cup, which had semifinals on Saturday and medal games on Sunday. Araraquara fended off Campinas in the first game and then Sampaio had an easier time with Santo Andre. Campinas started well to win the bronze medal game and then the big rivalry of recent seasons was for the championship as Sampaio had a good start and then pulled away late for the win over Araraquara.
Alexis Poole had the standout performance in Chile this week with a 30 point effort.
Australia
All of the conferences of NBL1 were in action this week, including the South starting with a 34 point game from Keely Froling for the Northern Force and a 20 rebound game from Zitina Aokuso for the Melbourne Tigers. Marena Whittle had 31 points in a Dandenong Rangers win and Sharna Thompson had 32 points to lead the Hobart Chargers to a win. Abbey Ellis had the highest scoring game with 37 points for the Diamond Valley Eagles.
Monique Bobongie had 32 points to secure a win for the Mackay Meteorettes in the North conference. Shanique Lucas had 31 points in a Rockhampton Cyclones win and Erin Bollmann helped the Sunshine Coast Phoenix finish the week with a win after scoring 34 points.
The Mandurah Magic got a good win in the West conference after Mikayla Pivec had a 20 point, 14 rebound, 13 assist triple-double and Sharn Hayward added 32 points. Cassidy Lacey-Rameka had 22 rebounds in a win for the South West Slammers.
Niclole Munger had the highest-scoring game in the East conference with 35 points for the Newcastle Falcons. Jaz Shelley had 32 points to help the Norths Bears school the youngsters at the Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence. Nikki Worner grabbed 21 rebounds in a win for the Central Coast Crusaders.
The Central conference returned after a week off and Naomi Allotey helped the Woodville Warriors prevail in a shootout with 33 points.
Big V’s standout individual performance came in the lowest division as Zoe Vodden had 30 points in a win for the Coburg Giants.
Games in North West Tasmania were on Tuesday again this week, including Burnie’s win at Ulverstone. Sharna Thompson had the highest-scoring game with 36 points in Somerset’s win over Penguin. Paige French had 30 points in a Devonport win over Wynyard. Rhonda Price continued to rack up the rebounds for Smithton, but they lost to Latrobe, which got 30 points from Sarah O’Neill.
Kazakhstan
The bronze medal series continued with games in Atyrau on Tuesday and Wednesday. Ertis won the first of those games, but hosts Barsy bounced back to tie the series again and set up a deciding game in Pavlodar. The championship series started with games in Astana on Thursday and Friday. After the dominance of the hosts in the regular season, it was expected that they would roll here, but they had to battle back twice to get the wins over Okzhetpes.
Europe
Brod na Savi quickly put the game beyond reach on Tuesday to defeat Sibenik and win the championship in Croatia. The deciding game in the series to determine which other team would earn promotion from Turkey’s second division was played on Wednesday and Turgutlu got the home win over Kirklareli. Evora completed a sweep of Natacao on Saturday in Portugal’s second division to win the other promotion spot. Montbrison tied the championship series in France’s second division on Friday, but La Tronche Meylan won the deciding game at home on Sunday to grab the lone promotion spot.
