Weekly Report #56

Chile

The finals in Chile are set now after the second semifinal series was completed this week. Colegio Los Leones de Quilpue doubled their lead with another home win on Tuesday. That left Puente Alto needing a win at home on Saturday to avoid elimination, but they could not extend the series further after another decisive loss.

Australia

The end of the regular season in NBL1 is approaching with the playoff race heating up in all of the conferences. The Sandringham Sabres got 24 rebounds from Lucy Cochrane, but their loss to the Eltham Wildcats dropped them out of the three-way tie in the loss column that also features the Knox Raiders. Rachel Antoniadou had the highest-scoring game with 33 points for the Nunawading Spectres, followed by a 31 point game from the Mt. Gambier Pioneers.

Bree Stephens had 36 points for the Townsville Fire in the North conference. The Cairns Dolphins had been in a tie with the Logan Thunder at the top of the standings, but dropped a game when Mia Loyd had 30 points was not enough. Georgia Woolley had 39 points to seal the win for the North Gold Coast Seahawks.

Daniel Raber had 31 points for the Cockburn Cougars as they still lead the West conference. The Eastern Suns have had a tough year, but got 35 points from Alyssa Bowen to close the weekend with a win.

Talya Brugler had 34 points for the Norths Bears as they remained undefeated in the East conference. Jade Kirisome had the highest scoring game with 38 points for the Hills Hornets and Mia Heide had the highest rebounding game with 27 boards for the Newcastle Falcons. The Albury Wodonga Bandits got two triple-doubles in the same game as Last-Tear Poa had 14 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists and Emily Lytle had 19 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists. Chantel Horvat ended the weekend with 34 points for the Sydney Comets.

The Central conference only has one week of the regular season left and there is still a battle for playoff spots. Tayla Brazel had 30 points for the Sturt Sabres, which sits right behind the West Adelaide Bearcats at the top of the standings.

Oliana Squires had 31 points for the Sherbrooke Suns as they stayed in first place in Big V’s top division, half a game ahead of the McKinnon Cougars in the win column. The Melbourne University Black Angels had the weekend off as they are still undefeated in the middle division. The top two teams in the bottom division played with the Chelsea Gulls getting the win to build a two-game lead over the Blackburn Vikings and Wallan Panthers in the loss column.

This week’s round in North West Tasmania was on Friday again with one more round of games left in the regular season. Wynyard got a rare win, damaging Devonport’s playoff chances in the process. Penguin holds that last spot for now as Ava McDonald had 38 points and Ellie Collins had a 24 point, 13 rebound, 10 assist triple-double in their win over Somerset. That result allowed Burnie to move into a tie for first place as Mariah Payne had 32 points when they doubled up Ulverstone. Brydee McPherson had 30 points in Latrobe’s win over Smithton.
