South American Championship Game 1

The last four spots in next year’s AmeriCup will be awarded this week in Zarate, Argentina. Three countries in South America are not fielding a team in this event, leaving the remaining seven teams divided into two groups for the first stage. No teams in Group B will be eliminated at this stage while the last place team in Group A will no longer be in contention to advance to the confederation championship.

Group B

The first game on Monday was in this group as Brazil entered having not won the last edition and falling short again in a quest to qualify for a global event. They were able to bring in some of their young emerging players for this squad and took control early in an 85-57 win over Chile.

Group A

The first game in this group was expected to make the difference in which team would be eliminated at the end of the group stage. Uruguay looked to be in solid shape in the first half, but Paraguay’s comeback continued in the second half and they ended up getting the 68-63 win. The hosts and defending champions closed the day with a stifling defensive performance. Argentina still could not quite build up much of a until partway through the second half though, eventually pulling away for the 66-42 win over Colombia.
