A typhoon expected to affect the city of Dongguan forced Tuesday night’s games to be moved up to the morning. There are six teams in the tournament this year and representation from the West portion of the confederation for the first time as the quest to crown a true Asian club champion continues. The teams are divided into two groups with each team playing two games before the knockout round.
Group B got the competition started and Al Ula was looking forward to representing their half of the confederation, but despite having the two biggest-name foreign players of any team, they quickly learned how strong the Red Wave were even without a foreign player. The Japanese champions, who lost in the deciding game last year, rolled to a 128-43 win with Yuki Miyazawa, Maho Hayashi, and Riho Akagi leading them in scoring and also getting a professional debut from Sophia North.
The Group A game featured the hosts and surprise champions of China, Guangdong, welcoming the Ulaanbaatar Amazons from Mongolia. Kayleigh Truong and Amari Robinson helped the visitors keep the game close in the first half, but Aliyah Collier and Guangdong pulled away in the second half for the 90-74 win.
