EuroBasket 2025 Day 1

The 2025 edition of EuroBasket started on Wednesday with two of the four groups having their opening days. Each team will play the other three teams in their group in this phase with the top two teams advancing to the single site knockout round and the other two teams being eliminated. Five World Cup qualifying spots are available with the champion also securing a place in the final tournament.

Group A

This group is in Greece, which will also host the final phase of the tournament. France was still expected to contend even with a number of players missing, but they had a tough time with Teaira McCowan and Turkey in the first half. They rallied late to pull out a 71-69 win with Janelle Salaun leading the way. The host country was expected to win against Switzerland, one of the surprise qualifiers for the tournament, and rolled after an even first quarter, winning 87-65 behind Mariella Fasoula.

Group B

The other group to start play was this one in Italy as all four teams had reasonable beliefs that they could advance. Lithuania was making their return to this level and had a strong start to the game. Jessica Shepard and Slovenia leaned on more recent experience to fight back, but could not keep it up at the end, losing 77-71. The hosts were hoping to for an excellent start against a Serbia team still in transition and Cecilia Zandalasini helped them build a lead by halftime and it held up for a 70-61 win.
