The league is under new management this season and all of the teams played one game during the opening weekend. The now Southside Melbourne Flyers hosted the first game on Saturday, getting a good game from Tera Reed, but losing 80-71 to Canberra. Lauren Nicholson and Sydney won the other game 85-77. Geelong has solidified their nickname as the Venom and got a good overseas debut from Mackenzie Holmes, but Alissa Pili had to exit the game early.
The first game on Sunday was a championship series rematch and Townsville had a good start with Abbey Ellis helping get the opposite result of those finals with a 74-66 win. Lucy Olsen made her overseas debut in the win while Megan McConnell made her overseas debut for Bendigo. Olivia Pollerd and Kelsey Rees made their professional debuts in the loss. Adelaide is one of the teams hoping to benefit from the changes in the league and had a fresh start with overseas debuts from Sania Feagin and Serena Sundell, but Alex Ciabattoni made sure that Perth left with a 75-72 win.
