After not being played the last year, the club championship of the Americas is being contested again this year in Santiago, Chile. There are six teams, but Colombia’s Antioquia, which won the first two tournaments, is not defending their crown. Instead of two stages, this event will be played in one week, starting with group play. The top team in each group advances to the semifinals while the other two teams will start the knockout round in the quarterfinals.
Instead of adding these teams to our overall roster tracker, players who meet our usual criteria are listed here:
Araraquara (Brazil): Maisa Marcal, Arkansas Tech [DII]
Bay Area Phoenix (United States): Faatimah A, Texas A&M International [DII]; Connie Clarke, Missouri Western State [DII]; Isabel Gonzalez, Morehead State; Rosemarie Julien, Florida Gulf Coast; Aniya McDonald-Perry, New Haven; Kharyssa Richardson, Mississippi State; Alaiyah San Juan, Dominican [DII]; DeAngelique Waithe, LIU
Sportiva Italiana (Chile): Andrea Daley, Boston College; Jessica Jackson, Arkansas; Anisa Jeffries, Grand Canyon; Sierra Moore, Penn State, Valentina Ojeda; Rhode Island
Colegio Los Leones De Quilpue (Chile): Gabriela Ahumada, Central Point Christian Academy (FL); Iggy Allen, Old Dominion; Maca Retamales, Florida Gulf Coast; Brianna Turnage; Georgia Tech, Alisha Wilson; Alabama A&M
Defensor Sporting (Uruquay): Schekinah Bimpa, Limestone [DII]
Ferro (Argentina): Lucila Sampietro, Otero [JC]
Group B
This group started play on each day of the tournament with the opening game being on Tuesday. Brazilian representation is important to helping determine a true club champion of the Americas and Araraquara took a break from regional competition to participate. They faced a Sportiva Italiana team that was looking to win in their home country, bringing in experience as well as talented younger players like Anisa Jeffries, who was making her professional debut. It was a close game at halftime, but the local team pulled away again in the second half to get the 66-44 win.
The Bay Area Phoenix finished as runners up two years ago and are once again a team representing a league in the United States that is actively participating in the international basketball ecosystem. Aniya McDonald-Perry and Kharyssa Richardson are the two players on their roster who are making their international debuts, but they adjusted well as the two leading scorers in their 72-69 win on Wednesday, leaving Aline Moura and Araraquara in last place in the group.
Thursday’s game was for first place in the group with the winner also getting a bye to the semifinals instead of needing to play again tomorrow in the quarterfinals. Sportiva Italiana went to work in the first half to secure that spot, getting big games from Andrea Daley and Sierra Moore. The Bay Area Phoenix played them closer in the second half, but it was still a 106-73 win for the local team.

Group A
Defensor Sporting enters the tournament with the best recent competitive experience having just come up short in the finals in Uruguay. Colegio Los Leones De Quilpue also wanted to build a strong roster to try and win the championship in their home country, including getting Alisha Wilson and Brianna Turnage their first overseas experience, and Martina Orellana led them in scoring as they pulled away in the second half for the 71-57 win.
Ferro of Argentina was the last team to make their debut in the tournament, playing in the nightcap on Wednesday after participating in the last edition, but not advancing to the medal rounds. Defensor Sporting had the better start, but Ferro was able to close the gap by halftime. They took the lead in the second half, but Nicole Tapari was excellent for Defensor Sporting and almost got them the win, but their comeback fell short 78-76, leaving them in last place in the group.
The top spot was up for grabs in the group on Thursday with the accompanying bye to the semifinals on the line. Sassa Goncalves and Ferro started well and had the lead at halftime. Colegio Los Leones de Quilpue had a great third quarter though and Iggy Allen had a big game for them in the 75-59 win.
