AmeriCup 2025 Day 1

The championship of the Americas started on Saturday in Santiago, Chile with ten teams trying to win the gold medal and a spot in next year’s World Cup. Teams that finish in the second through sixth places will advance to World Cup qualifying tournaments in March. The teams are divided into two groups and the bottom team is eliminated after the round-robin with the rest of the teams playing in the quarterfinals.

Group A

This group started the day and El Salvador was returning to this level with a tough opening test against Canada, which rolled to a 100-34 win. Brazil is the defending champions in this event, but they have failed to qualify for four consecutive global tournaments, so they are going all-out to win again, bringing in their two WNBA players in a bid to secure the automatic World Cup spot. Damiris Dantas helped them blast right out of the gates in a 71-50 win over Argentina.

Group B

In this group, Puerto Rico was looking to continue their string of global qualifications and had upstarts Colombia first, needing to rally in the second half to get a 68-65 win as good games from Jenifer Munoz and Manuela Rios ended up not being enough. The United States won the first two editions of the tournament in which they fielded college players due to mandatory participation in the current system, but lost in the championship game two years ago. They faced the hosts in the last game of the day and were not overwhelming in the first quarter, but their bench, including Raegan Beers helped ensure that it was a blowout 108-47 win.
