The Asia Cup tournament started on Sunday in Shenzhen, China with both Division A and Division B games being played. The eight teams in Division A are competing to win the gold medal an automatic spot in next year’s World Cup while the next five highest finishers will advance to qualifying for the event. The teams that finish in last place in each of the groups after three round-robin games will face each other in a critical game that determines which team will stay in the division in 2027 and which team will drop down. The Division B tournament has the same format with the winner earning a spot in Division A in 2027.
Division A
The hosts and defending champions closed the day against Indonesia and rolled to a 110-59 win. The day started in the other group and Rebecca Akl and Lebanon were looking for a major upset against the team that had been dominating this competition in recent years. Japan eventually recovered from the slower start though to get the 72-68 win. Australia has never quite had the expected level of success here after Oceania and Asia merged, but started off with an easy 115-39 win over the Philippines.
