Even though AmeriCup just finished recently, the championship of Central America started on Tuesday in Managua, Nicaragua to start the qualification process for the tournament in two years. The top three teams in this tournament will qualify for next summer’s Centrobasket tournament when they join the top teams in the Caribbean in fighting for spots in the confederation championship. Belize is the only team that is not participating so the seven teams are divided in uneven groups. The top two teams in each group advance to the semifinals.
Group A
This group is the one with four teams and they started their round-robin first with a pair of games. Defending champions El Salvador were coming off of an appearance at AmeriCup and looked strong in an 82-35 win over Honduras. The hosts played the second game and got the 61-36 win against Costa Rica with Kiyomi McMiller leading the way.
