Centrobasket Day 1

Eight teams headed to Managua, Nicaragua for the Centrobasket tournaments. There are two groups for round-robin play with the last place team getting eliminated after those games. The top three finishers in the tournament besides El Salvador will join them in next summer’s AmeriCup.

Group B

Sunday’s action started in this group with El Salvador knowing that they would advance to AmeriCup, but still trying to put in a good effort in this tournament. Guyana had a great start, but struggled with depth and got forced into overtime where Brandi Harvey-Carr finished a fantastic game to secure the 85-84 win. Multiple players played the entire game for Guyana, including Ruth Adams and Ava Thomas, while Joy Adams recorded a triple-double before fouling out in overtime. Puerto Rico has controlled recent tournaments, but found themselves in a battle in their opening game. Anisha George and the US Virgin Islands briefly got the lead again in the fourth quarter, but Zaida Gonzalez helped the four-time defending champions hold on for an 81-75 win.
