The format changed for the qualification to the next edition of this tournament to more fully utilize all four national team windows between the summers. Teams that will participate in World Cup qualifying are exempted from this round, leaving 27 teams competing for 17 spots in the next stage. Teams play a double round-robin with up to three games each in this window and the March window and the top two teams will advance. Three third-place teams will also advance based on their performance in the games against the top two teams in their group since a 28th team could not be found to make all of the groups the same size. The first set of games was on Wednesday.

Norway is the other team making their debut in this cycle, playing well in Vienna before losing to Sarah Sagerer and Austria 63-48. Switzerland was certainly not likely to sneak up on anyone this time after making it to the last tournament, but it took a while for Holly Winterburn and Great Britain to seize control in Manchester for the 85-64 win.
