Moca needed a win at home on Wednesday to avoid elimination in Puerto Rico and they took care of business. That left Manati wanting to clinch the series at home on Friday to avoid a deciding game, but Leigha Brown scored 32 points in overtime win for Moca. The final game was on Sunday and Moca took care of business at home to secure the championship in a dramatic series.
The finals were played in El Salvador this week as Anisleidy Galindo scored 30 points in an easy win for San Salvador in the opener on Wednesday. Santa Ana needed to win at home on Friday to force a deciding game, but came up short.
The regular season rumbled on in Argentina as Instituto and El Talar still hold two games leads in their respective conferences. Carla Miculka had the highest scoring game with 30 points while Malvina D’Agostino grabbed 20 rebounds in a game.
In Chile, one zone finished play this weekend, including a 32 point game from Sonya Morris. The playoffs started in the South with the University of Concepcion sweeping Puerto Montt in one series.
Asia
Series were on a Saturday-Sunday schedule in Japan’s upper group and Saori Miyazaki had 32 points in an overtime game to earn a split for the Sunflowers against the Sunshine Rabbits. The other three series were sweeps as the Antelopes defeated the Wings, the Red Wave defeated the Vickies, and the Iris defeated the Magic. In the lower group, the Queen Bees swept the Rabbits on a Friday-Saturday schedule. The Koalas swept the Egrets in one Saturday-Sunday series and the Aranmare handed the Cougars their first loss in earning a split.
There were two series on a Saturday-Sunday schedule in Kazakhstan’s top division. Caspiy won the first game, but Ertis salvaged a split the next day. Astana swept their games at Okzhetpes. The second division also started play with the single-site format used again, meaning a lot of games were played in Atyrau over the course of the week. The highest-scoring game came from Dariya Tsunkanova when she had 40 points while Shakhnoza Abeuova had a 32 point effort and Arina Gubenko had a 30 point game. Steals were also a story as Azhar Abeuova had 11 in a game and Liana Dymovckikh and Aiym Maxim each got to 10 in a game.
The season started in South Korea this week with games on Sunday and Monday. BNK won the opener against the S-Birds and then Hana Bank defeated Woori Bank.
New Zealand
The Queens started the weekend with a pair of decisive wins over the Kahu, including getting 21 rebounds from Penina Davidson in the main game. The other two games were on Sunday, starting with the Hoiho losing the reserve game, but winning the main game against the Queens. The other matchup was also a split as the Pouakai got the main game win over the Whai.
Europe
It was a quieter week in Europe with the national team break, but there were top division games in some countries as well as some lower division games. Olesia Malashenko had 23 rebounds in Malta. Isabella Mauricio had 36 points in a loss in Kosovo while another game saw Dazia Lawrence score 42 points in a win as Lauren Carter had 20 rebounds for the opposition.
Valeria Kutsenko had 33 and 36 point games in Ukraine’s second division and Anastasia Borovska had a 30 point game. Miya Crump was the leading scorer in Turkey’s second division while Dekeiya Cohen grabbed 20 rebounds. Sierra Smith and Irina Fidalgo had 20 rebounds each in Portugal’s second division while Sienna Durr had 36 points. A battle in Lithuania’s second division saw Goda Ziutelyte score 34 points in the win which Vakare Griskute matched in the loss. In Iceland’s second division, Andrea Jovicevic had 31 points and Sigrun Sol Brjansdottir had 32 points.
