Teams headed to four sites to determine who grab the eleven remaining spots in this year’s tournament. Five teams have already secured their spots, but are participating in these events to prepare. Each tournament is a full round-robin of six teams with games on Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday, and Tuesday. Four teams from each tournament, including the teams that have already qualified, will advance.
Wuhan
The first games to be played were in China and Czechia, which secured a spot in this event two summers ago, started with an 89-52 win over Maria Gakdeng and South Sudan. Belgium is the team in this tournament that has already qualified as being crowned champions of Europe and they looked strong, making quick work of a Brazil team trying to break a global tournament drought, winning 99-70. The hosts closed the day and Li Yueru led them in an 81-68 win over Mali.

Istanbul
Australia is the team in this group that already qualified after winning the Asia Cup and coasted in their opener with a 91-65 win over Argentina. Hungary was the other team to secure a spot in these tournaments two years ago after shaking off a disappointing end to their last global quest. They started avenging that edition of the team as Dorka Juhasz was brilliant in their 77-65 win over Japan. Turkey had the homecourt advantage and newly naturalized player, starting their game fantastically. Bridget Carleton and Canada roared back to briefly take the lead, but fell behind again to lose 71-69.

Lyon-Villeurbanne
This group is the one with two teams that have already qualified, including African champions Nigeria. It was close in the first half, but they eventually pulled away from Colombia for a 70-37 win. Germany will be hosting the main event and missed a couple of key players here, giving Frieda Buhner the opportunity to lead them again as they defeated South Korea 76-49. Half of the teams in this group are basically battling for one spot as hosts France figure to qualify easily, opening with a 115-66 win over the Philippines as Dominique Malonga led the way.

The last tournament to get underway opened with Megan Gustafson and Spain cruising past New Zealand 99-50. The United States has already qualified as champions of the Americas, but that tournament was won with college players so this was the first chance to see the new coaching regime with professional players. Rhyne Howard was the leading scorer as they started with a 110-46 win over Senegal. Hosts Puerto Rico played the last game of the day and lost to Italy 78-41.
